ConforMIS Wins Gold Recognition at Medical Design Excellence Awards

BURLINGTON, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The iUni® and iDuo® minimally invasive, patient-specific partial knee resurfacing implants, developed by ConforMIS, Inc., have been awarded the premier recognition for advances in the design of medical products, a Gold 2009 Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA). ConforMIS was among three companies recognized in the category of implant and tissue replacement products at a ceremony held on June 10th during the Medical Design & Manufacturing East (MD&M East) 2009 Conference and Exposition.

ConforMIS’ proprietary iFit® technology uses individual patient’s CT scans to create precisely sized and shaped partial knee resurfacing implants that match the 3D topography of the patient’s bone surfaces. ConforMIS implants resurface only the affected areas, minimizing surgical trauma and helping to preserve healthy bone and cartilage that can be lost in a traditional knee replacement. The iUni is designed for unicompartmental knee resurfacing in patients whose arthritic damage is isolated to just one compartment of the knee. The iDuo is the first and only patient-specific bicompartmental knee resurfacing implant, designed for patients affected by disease in just two of the three compartments of the knee.

Each implant is packaged together with a tray of disposable, patient-specific cutting and placement guides called iJigs®, designed from the same scans as the implant. iJigs eliminate the need for manual sizing and provide tactile guidance during surgery to precisely place the instruments, simplifying and improving surgical technique and eliminating trays of complex surgical instruments.
